Sweden: Key figures for 2026

Swedish employees pay municipal income tax on almost everything they earn, a state income tax on high incomes, and a 7 % general pension fee that is returned as a tax credit. The estimate follows the calculation that Skatteverket publishes for its 2026 withholding tables.

Key figures for 2026
Item2026 rule
Price base amount (prisbasbelopp)59,200 SEK
State income tax20 % on taxable income above 643,000 SEK
General pension fee7 % of income, from 25,042 SEK up to 673,038 SEK
Public service fee1 % of taxable income, at most 1,184 SEK
Burial and church-body feeAverage 1.16 percentage points, already part of the table rate
Earned income tax creditJobbskatteavdrag, applied against municipal tax
Tax reduction for earned incomeUp to 1,500 SEK, from taxable income of 40,000 SEK

From salary to taxable income

The basic allowance (grundavdrag) is deducted from your yearly income. It is 42.3 % of the price base amount for low incomes, rises by 20 % of the income above 0.99 price base amounts until it reaches 77 % of the price base amount at 2.72 price base amounts, stays there up to 3.11, then falls by 10 % of the income above that level and ends at 29.3 % of the price base amount for incomes above 7.88 price base amounts. The estimate rounds the allowance up to whole hundreds of kronor, as the official description does.

Taxes, fees and credits

Municipal tax is the table rate minus the average burial fee, multiplied by taxable income. The general pension fee is subtracted again through a tax credit, then the earned income tax credit and the tax reduction for earned income reduce what remains of the municipal tax. The estimate uses column 1 of the tables: employees who are younger than 66 at the start of the year.

You choose the table number that matches your municipality, from 29 to 42. The number is the combined municipal and regional tax rate rounded to the nearest whole percentage point, and Skatteverket publishes the rate of every municipality.

What the estimate does not cover

  • Church membership fees are not included beyond the average burial fee.
  • Employees aged 66 or older use other columns and are not covered.
  • Pension savings, union fees, travel deductions and benefits in kind are not modelled.
  • Employer contributions (arbetsgivaravgifter) are paid on top of your salary and do not reduce your net pay.
