the Netherlands: Key figures for 2026

In the Netherlands income tax and national insurance premiums are combined in box 1. The first bracket includes the premiums for old-age pension (AOW), survivors (Anw) and long-term care (Wlz). Two tax credits, the general credit and the labour credit, are then subtracted.

Key figures for 2026
Item2026 rule
Bracket 135.75 % up to 38,883 EUR (includes national insurance premiums)
Bracket 237.56 % from 38,883 up to 78,426 EUR
Bracket 349.50 % above 78,426 EUR
General tax creditUp to 3,115 EUR, phased out from 29,736 EUR at 6.398 %, zero at 78,426 EUR
Labour tax creditUp to 5,685 EUR, phased out from 45,592 EUR at 6.51 %, zero at 132,920 EUR

Box 1 and the credits

Tax is calculated per bracket on your yearly gross salary. The general credit is the same for everyone with a low income and shrinks above 29,736 EUR. The labour credit grows in three steps with your earnings, peaks at 45,592 EUR and then shrinks. Both credits can only reduce the tax you owe, so they never create a negative tax bill in this estimate.

What your employer pays on top

Employers also pay the income-related health insurance contribution (Zvw) and other premiums. These do not reduce your net pay and are not shown. Your pension contribution, which many employers deduct, is not included in this estimate either.

What the estimate does not cover

  • The estimate is for employees younger than the state pension (AOW) age.
  • Enter your yearly total including holiday allowance (typically 8 %), or divide it by twelve to get a monthly figure that matches your contract.
  • Pension contributions, the 30 % ruling and other special schemes are not modelled.
  • The payroll tax credit (loonheffingskorting) is assumed to be applied by your employer.
